Could the Big Bang Theory of the origin of the Universe have been developed without Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity?
I realize that Einstein's field equations from General Relavity have been fundamental to developing the model of the expanding universe from the hypothetical Big Bang. However, is the notion that Space and Time are related essential to this? Couldn't gravity affect light just as General Relativity predicts, without light necessarily constraining time?
In any case, could the Big Bang Theory of the origin of the Universe simply have been developed without Einstein at all, on the basis of other evidence?
